White House Correspondents’ Dinner 2000
Now, the Bloomberg party is also a cast party for the stars of The West Wing, who are celebrating the end of their first season. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not as excited as everyone else is at the thought of a West Wing finale party. But I’ve got to give them credit; their first season got a lot better ratings than mine did — (laughter) — not to mention the reviews. The critics just hated my travel office episode. (Laughter and applause.) And that David Gergen cameo fell completely flat. (Laughter.)

The West Wing ►In the Shadow of Two Gunmen, Part II (2x02)
“This is our fifth press briefing since midnight. Obviously, there’s one story that’s going to dominate news around the world for the next few days, and it would be easy to think that President Bartlet, Joshua Lyman, and Stephanie Abbott were the only victims of a gun crime last night. They weren’t. Mark Davis and Sheila Evans of Philadelphia were killed by a gun last night. He was a biology teacher and she was a nursing student. Tina Bishop and Linda Larkin were killed with a gun last night. They were 12. There were 36 homicides last night. 480 sexual assaults, 3,411 robberies, 3,685 aggravated assaults, all at gunpoint. And if anyone thinks those crimes could have been prevented if the victims themselves had been carrying guns, I’d only remind you that the President of the United States was shot last night while surrounded by the best trained armed guards in the history of the world. Back to the briefing.”

The date tells me that this is from the “upfronts,” the presentation of the fall schedule to the advertisers. It’s usually where I find out that my favorite ratings-challenged show has been cancelled.
My brother and I used to collect pennies. Pick ‘em up off the street, put ‘em in an old whiskey bottle that we swiped from my old man. Every few months or so, we’d go to the bank to get these paper things - tubes to make rolls of change. My brother said ‘Never walk down the street without a roll of pennies in your pocket. You belt a guy with a roll of pennies in your fist, you do some damage.’

“I can only hope so, sir.”
